Biography

WHY I'M RUNNING
Seattle deserves better results from our City Council! I want to bring my PRACTICAL PROGRESSIVE approach to solving the issues we face in District 3. I would be honored to serve as your voice on the Seattle City Council.

ABOUT PAT
After moving to Seattle to attend the University of Washington, I fell in love with Seattle and chose to live here permanently. The first home I purchased was in the Central Area, not far from Garfield High School.

For 30+ years I've owned and operated a small IT firm. I work with businesses large and small, from a wide array of industries, across the region.

My husband Shiro, and I have been married for 26 years. We have a son, Ryk. He is enrolled in the Paramedicine program at Central Washington University, and works part-time as an EMT.

My education: a B.A. in Sociology and a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Washington; a Master's in Business Administration from the University of Puget Sound.

I have lived in District 3 for but a few of the years I've lived in Seattle, including the Central Area, Broadway District, Capitol Hill, Leschi and Mt. Baker.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
For decades I have dedicated my time to improving Seattle. A few examples of my involvement: President of the Mount Baker Community Club; an active member of the Federation of Community Councils; President of the Cleveland High School PTSA; Vice President of the Seattle District Council; current President of the South Seattle Crime Prevention Council; and engagement in many zoning and equity issues.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
In 2006 I founded and led an organization called Many Cultures, One Message. We successfully blocked Mayor Nickels' attempt to declare all of SE Seattle blighted. A blight designation would have given the City the power to force immigrant and modest-income property owners to sell at bargain prices. The City's intent was to later "sell the properties to developers at a discount."

While serving on the Seattle Public Schools Closure Committee I fought to protect schools from closure in areas where population growth was expected, and to ensure equity for low-income students and students of color. I came up with creative solutions of how to best serve student needs, which the District sadly ignored, resulting in disproportionate harm to low-income students and students of color.

As President of the Cleveland High School PTSA, I convinced reluctant parents to host the school's first auction fundraiser in its nearly 90-year history. We raised over six times the national average for school auctions, and used all proceeds to purchase much-needed resources for Cleveland students.

My experience as a civic leader and business owner will bring creative solutions to improve Seattle and tackle our toughest challenges.

To be available IN our District to address your concerns.

Protect our neighborhoods from gentrification.

Ensure developers work with the neighborhood where construction will take place, meeting community needs, protecting legacy tenants and businesses, and resulting in a successful project for all concerned.

Create more affordable housing, especially for families with children.

Charge developers impact fees for infrastructure, thereby reducing taxes for Seattle residents and businesses.

Provide on-demand drug rehabilitation, mental health and support services for those living on our streets, getting the homeless into permanent housing as soon as possible.

Create a home buying program for teachers, first responders, nurses, tradespeople and families who have traditionally been denied the opportunity to own a home.

Use my extensive knowledge of businesses in Seattle to create living-wage jobs.

Facilitate the creation of a community-owned and operated grocery store in the Central Area (New Seasons might serve the newcomers but not the existing neighborhood.)

Support the success of small businesses.

Always put the interests of Seattle residents before the interests of out-of-state/country corporations.
